An eating disorder is a potentially life-threatening illness characterized by disturbances in eating habits and excessive concern about body weight and shape. It permeates all aspects of an individual's life; influencing self-esteem, school, work, social life and family relationships. Eating disorders include, but are not limited to: Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa and Compulsive eating. The causes of an eating disorder continue to be studied and are likely a combination of psychological, biological, familial and cultural factors.

The Eating Disorder Consortium of Baltimore is a group of health professionals, in and around the Baltimore metropolitan area, who have expertise in the treatment of eating disorders and have experience in both outpatient and inpatient settings. The purpose of the Consortium is to provide comprehensive outpatient care to those individuals and families struggling with an eating disorder who are candidates for outpatient treatment. The clinicians who make up the Consortium are a group of independent mental health practitioners and nutritionists who work in concert in order to facilitate the continuity of care necessary for recovery.

Comprehensive care includes:
  • Individual Therapy

  • Family Therapy

  • Psychopharmacology

  • Nutrition Counseling

  • Family Education and Support

  • Body and Movement Therapy

The Eating Disorder Consortium of Baltimore incorporates, as part of its treatment philosophy, the principle of health at every size. The focus points of this philosophy are:
  • Accepting and respecting the diversity of body shapes and sizes

  • Recognizing that health and well-being are multi-dimensional and that they include physical, social, spiritual, occupational, emotional and intellectual aspects

  • Promoting eating in a manner which balances individual nutritional needs, hunger, satiety, appetite and pleasure

  • Promoting individually appropriate, enjoyable, life-enhancing physical activity rather than exercise that is focused on a goal of weight loss

  • Promoting all aspects of health and well-being for people of all sizes (source: Association for Size Diversity and Health.)
